Vs. Debate: War on drugs.

After watching most the Vs. debate: war on drugs this afternoon, I’d have to say I agree with ending the war on drugs.

Personally I don’t understand why the opposing argument focused so much on treatment; surely prevention of addiction will be far more effective, for addicts and the costs for the government. Of course I understand and appreciate the need for drug rehabilitation programs and the need for the to be effective so relapse doesn't happen and people effected can rebuild their lives. 

Again drug users being put in prison because of their chosen 'high'. Someone in the debate mentioned that actually drug use in prisons was particularly bad. So it's making the users worse instead of better. Rehab, trying to fix the problem, opposed to locking people up and make them resent the government, because they may not have anything to go back to after they get out of prison potentially making the whole situation worse. But that's subjective dependant on the individuals situation. 

Again appreciation of subjectivity didn't seem to be the against arguers strong point. As not every drug user is an addict or in a situation where they're loosing control. 

I think it’s contradictive that alcohol is more harmful than cannabis and it’s legal. I just don’t think that makes sense: having more people exposed to a more harmful drug (alcohol).

We’re all already aware of how destructive drugs can be on people’s lives and all (most likely) agree that it’s something that must be stopped. Thing is addiction never will be unless of course the neuroscientists do get funding to do the research that could potentially fix this problem. Isn’t science great.

I do think that the legalisation of drugs could help, as there would be much more control over the situation. If the government controlled drugs that came in/out of the country then they could potentially minimize massively the underground drug industry. Also ensuring the drugs themselves where safer, and had less of the addictive/ harmful chemical compounds which do the most damage.

Either way both arguments were well fought and had interesting points to their arguments.
